Fifteen years ago a friend shared this music with me, and it certainly captured my imagination. His copy was on a cassette, and I never got a copy. So I only heard “Rubber Room” a few times. Then I got to thinking about it, and through the miracle of technology, I’ve got my own copy. It makes you wonder what Fred Lane’s trajectory would have been if he’d been performing during the days of the internet.

In case you ever wanna meet Fred’s brother, he owns a record store in Birmingham, Alabama called REED BOOKS which is probably one of the best ‘quirky’ bookstores I’ve ever been to. If you play your cards right, he’ll start telling you stories about Fred. And might even sell you an original copy of one of his brothers two albums….

I’ve been in love with this LP ever since I discovered it around the mid-90s. The made-up (?) record covers printed on the back are pretty cool, too…. Get Outta My Gal (by Hugo Danny Vreen)… Don’t Use That To Wash The Car… Fred Lane Sings Some Of Your Fried Fish… Brilliant! And, don’t forget: “for best results play side 2 first”!

I used to have this record. Another victim of one of my purges. I remember thinking “Mystic Tune” was one of the funniest attempts to challenge the listeners’ patience I’d ever heard. I liked Car Radio Jerome better, but this one is probably more demented. I’m psyched to hear it again. Yeah, the Spike Jones comparison is pretty apt.
