76% Uncertain – Estimated Monkey Time

76% Uncertain – Estimated Monkey Time (Schmegma) 1984. 76% Uncertain were a GREAT band from Connecticut who probably would be a household name amongst the punters if they had come out two years earlier. Estimated Monkey Time, thier debut album, came out in 1984 which was pretty late for a hardcore band. Seen in the blur of history, this album is a total masterpiece.

Sound-wise, I always thought 76% Uncertain had a lot in common with early Social Unrest from California. This was largely due to the odd chord changes and progressions as well as the interesting lyrics. The fact that 76% Uncertain were from New England (CT), always struck me as odd because they sound very Californian mixed with a bit of DC. Sometimes it reminds me a bit of the Descendents at thier most crazed (Kids On Coffee, Tonyage). Other times, I hear The Faith. But even though 76% Uncertain is reminscent of these bands, they are never derivative.

Anyway, this is one that fell under the radar for a lot of people back in the day. It’s one of my favorite pure old school hardcore LPs of all time. Peter at Killed By Death is obviously a fan too and posted some live stuff by 76% Uncertain a while back. Get it here. This album got a 10 at Flex as well, so he is obviously a fan.

Thanks for the post! Kick ass band!!

Simply one of the most under-rated and overlooked classic. Great post

  4. OTTO says:

Agree with your ‘two years earlier’ comment. I remember when this record came out (I was still DJing on college radio). It was great, but I hardly ever played it.

My co-host and I had begun to drift beyond the confines of straght-ahead hardcore and were branching out. The scene was changing (cross-over, boy scout straight-edge jocks, racist skins)… and 76% Uncertain’s great record dropped right into the middle of it all… Too bad, ‘cuz it is a great record (Constant Change is a personal fave) and I was (coincidentally) listening to it in the car all last week.

I saw these guys on tour supporting this album. (mid 80′s) Guitar Godz Suk! They were fantastic and full of energy! It was one of the best shows I ever saw. I bought this at the show and later taped it so I could play it at 200 watts in my old car. Top 10 Hardcore records for sure! Thanks for the post!

Was listening to this on my mp3 player to & from work today. I’d agree that it is really under-rated, maybe cos they were from Connecticut rather than NYC. Love the song “Coffee Achievers” even though I can’t stand the stuff! Also love the other CT bands like CIA & REFLEX FROM PAIN, who contain memebers from 76%.

Just got round tolistening to this now and DAMN it is supergood! Thanks for this post!

  8. Joe Stumble says:

Its great ennit! I think both Otto and Adamski are right. Combination of geography and timing cursed this LP. 2 years earlier and in Boston or New York and this LP would be considered by all to be the classic that it really is.

  9. Joe Stumble says:

I think they were they just probably didn’t have the money or connections (geography) to record until later. By the time they did, the moment had passed.

Saw these guys many times live and they always ruled. If you like this you should look for the last one they did, “Hunka Hunka Burning Log”- great riffs and vocals, kicks ass. Very good record in its own right.

  12. Joe Stumble says:

Hunk Hunka has, I believe, the song “I Hate The Radio” on it which is currently being used on one of Tony Hawks video games. You gotta give Hawk a little credit for that.

  13. David George says:

Thanks to all of you for all the great comments. It is good to know that people still enjoy what we did.

We still get together and do shows from time to time (like Boston a few days ago). Don’t expect us to venture too far from the northeast US, but you never know.

We do expect to re-release all of our recordings on CD in the near future. Hopefully we can include some other nuggets that you’ll enjoy too.

Not sure how much Tony Hawk had to do with us getting a song onto his game, but we’re proud that they deemed us worthy of inclusion.

Keep tuned to our myspace page to find out what we are up to.

Thanks for posting David! I always assumed tony hawk had a say in what was on the video games because if it were up to the conglomerates, there would be less legit oldies and more “my chemical romance” / “avril lavigne” type stuff.
