The Crewd – Gather Round EP

The Crewd – Gather Round (Bemisbrain Records) 1983. Its muggy as hell here in swampland. Muggy and miserable. Puts me in a dour mood. So what am I gonna do? I’m gonna listen to Gather Round by The Crewd. Yeahhhh! You got a problem with that?

Cuz the Crewd were one of those great Long Beach bands from the early 1980′s who just plain didn’t give a fuck. Gather Round came out in 1983 and was one of those one-sided deals like Back To The Known by Bad Religion. Except this one has an etching of a demon on the B-side!

Musically, its pretty much stratightforward SoCal punk/HC circa 1983 but the singing is definitely unique. If you think Springa from SSD sounds constipated, then the singer in The Crewd must be completely log-jammed. Also, note the electronic drum clap-machine used every once in a while (Every Mother’s Dream). Nice touch!

Thanks to Matt for the killer rip of this. This is the kind of thing that Squabbler would have posted over at American Punk In Suburbia if he hadn’t have disappeared off the face of the earth. I have added the three tracks they recorded for the You Can’t Argue With Sucksess LP from Mystic. They are a little more minimal than the LP and I (along with Squabbler) like them more. I wonder what happened to Squabbler? Did he get whacked by Doug Moody?

The vocals are an aquired taste, Joe, but I kinda like them. The music is cool, too, in that SoCal catchy kinda way. One of the more obscure SoCal bands.
By the way, I also wonder what happened to Squabbler. He had a great blog going & then he just disappeared. Anyone got a clue of his whereabouts?

Oh man, thanks sooo much for this stuff. First time I’ve ever heard the EP, and it’s totally great in true dark n grim Long Beach/Bemisbrain fashion.

I believe Smitty went on to sing for the late 80′s band Hard As Nails, Cheap As Dirt – though somebody’s gonna have to confirm that for me.

Yeah, Smitty sang for Hard as Nails, Cheap as Dirt. They were a very very funny band. On purpose and everything.

  4. Mike says:

The Circle Jerks’ Roger Rogerson was the bass player at some point for the Crewd.

I remember this from the 9th Grade. For years I have lookd for this. I cant thank you guys enough. Brought me back to my memories from when I 14years old. All my friends will appreciate having this music in their collections. There was so much good english/european punk back in the day. English Dogs, Exploited, GBH, true classics!

  6. Madman says:

They were american punk? WOW, never thought that.

  7. Joe says:

Hey @Madman…Long Beach band but I can totally see where you would think UK due to the vocals and approach. Love all the bands you listed and would add The Violators, Partisans, Anti-Pasti and Abrasive Wheels to the list as well!
