Somebody Guess This Mystery Band

Karol-O, a reader from Poland sent me this and asked if I knew who it was. It took me a few days to get around to playing it but when I did I got real intrigued. Karol’s recording is handheld and very poor so it is hard to make out. There are brief seconds where I almost make it out but then I lose it again. I think it is some Am-Rep related thing from the 1990’s but maybe I’m wrong? Somebody out there wanna give it a shot?

Letsee, I don’t have any Eat Records to give out as a prize but I do have a box of shitty-ass promos. I would be glad to send one of those to the winner! Trust me…you can have em!

So come on, lets help Karol-O figure this one out!

Mystery Band

track one
track two

Also, has anyone ever heard of Complete? Wanna go to Hoogie Boogie Land? There’s no war there….just LOTS of meth.

Thanks to Jeff Sigmon on the TIRC Board for hepping me to this

Sounds very familiar for some reason. I’m thinking aling the lines of Chrome or Damon Edge solo stuff which, like the Helios solo stuff, was more rock-structured and riffy. The vocals sound very much like Damon Edge.

  2. MagmaGoblin says:

It’s the COWS. The bugle on track 2 is the giveaway. It’s the COWS recorded off a turntable with a handheld tape recorder while somebody reads the newspaper and crumples the pages. It’s the COWS COWS COWS definitely . . . obviously since its was a COWS tape to begin with.

  3. Skateghoul says:

    the cows suck

  4. Ari says:

    That is so wrong

  5. oigrito says:

i think this is NOT the cows… after Brian Miller comment’s i went to basement and dug the tapes with cows productions listened to whole of them and i think this is doubtful.
im going to write to radio dj’s who plays this kind of music in those times. Maybe they know whatt is the band. if i get to know about it i ‘m going to write here.

No idea on the ‘mistery band’, but I am now a full fledged member of the Complete Army…. Hoooogiiie Booogiiie!!!

Love any band where the guitar and bass player need to keep their eyes glued to the fretboard just to make sure those pesky fingers are where they’re supposed to be.

  7. Crees says:

    Scratch Acid’s first practice!!

  8. admin says:

Scratch Acid’s first practice - yer killin’ me!

It was determined by the TIRC folks by the way, that Hoogie Boogie Land has

    Meth
    Dr Seuss hats
    Menthol cigarettes

    And Does Not Have

    War
    Hate
    Dentists

OTTO — I knew you would join me in the Complete Army!

  9. lpd42 says:

Sounds like it could be helios creed, but not 100% sure.

  10. Brushback says:

No way that’s Jim Dandy in that video there? I’m just guessin’

  11. chris says:

    is that even in English?

  12. MRow says:

Audience cassette recording of mid-period SCIENTISTS, perhaps? No, wait - it’s gotta be demos of Gibby singing through a bullhorn with THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS in their Alt Tentacles daze. I’m sure of it.

  13. Brushback says:

I was thinking Butthole Surfers, too (though I’ve gotta get a listen on my own computer with better speakers).

  14. admin says:

Yeah I was thinking Helios but it doesnt have that phased out guitar sound from what I can tell. Of course it is really difficult to tell with the sound quality.

As far as the Buttholes..that does sound just like Gibby. Maybe it is. Again, it doesn’t have that whacked out Paul leary thing going on but maybe its early enough that he hadn’t started doing all of the weird shit and was just doing more bar chords.

Right now I’m placing my bets with Butthole Surfers. Somebodies gotta know though….

  15. hecubusRex says:

Butthole Surfers maybe, Foetus perhaps, early Residents?

  16. hecubusRex says:

Buttholes sounds right, or maybe Foetus? Or the Texas Chainsaw Experience? Early Residents?

  17. Brushback says:

Okay, now that I’ve gotten a better listen, Butthole Surfers might be off base– I’m thinking more along the lines of the Bunnybrains.

  18. Davy says:

    Alice Donut?

  19. Erich says:

Definitely (?) 90s stuff. Or Foetus.

  20. Brushback says:

The thing is, it doesn’t sound like a demo tape or a live audience recording to me. It sounds like someone holding a tape recorder next to a stereo speaker that’s playing a legitimate (if somewhat obscure) 7″ release, or something like that being played over the radio… if enough people hear this, any minute now someone’s gonna say, “Hey, I own that record, and it’s such-and-such”, and it’s gonna seem pretty obvious to all of us then– at least, that’s my guess.

  21. admin says:

Thats what I think too. I believe it may even be an LP but I think it is a legit release by a legit band

  22. chriso says:

sounds out like some whacked out band from texas.
    somthing perhaps Bobby Soxx related.
Or some freaked out scratch acid shit.

  23. chriso says:

    regardless it sucks…:)

  24. theonlytruepunk says:

At first it sounded like the Fall…then like the B. Surfers…and then I thought it was just pure shit. Haha. Complete is a band that mix Captain Beefheart with Dr. Hook…they too suck ass. Haha

  25. Karol.O says:

First of all i would like thanks to Joe for posting my request and nice descriptionand every one who try to help me

I think that records could be recorded from radio. - i’ve got those tracks on the end of tape with some lp of cows and hammerhead on second side. thats why i think they were from some compilation or 7” of amph/rep.rec. also it could be the solo project of some one guy from most famous band.

it sounds similar to boby soxx, sctratch acid, even to no trend but i would like to know concrete ”this is…”

(to Brushback: i ‘ve never written that i’ve got some rare records and lost demo or something, i only would like to know the name of artist.
to everyone: this is not scratch acid - i check demos and their discography greatest gift cd,
to MRow: i dont know well production of butthole surfers, could you write which lp/ep is that if you are sure?)

  26. Joe says:

I dont think it is the butthole surfers. if it were, it would be early (83ish) but the guitar playing is just too conventional. MROW could know more than I do on it though.

Saying that you have it on a tape with Hammerhead and the Cows re-affirms to me that it is probably an Am-Rep act.

Brushback was pointing out that a lot of people on here are suggesting its a rare demo becasue of the sound quality when actually it is probably a legit release. I agree with that.

I checked these Am Rep bands that could apply and none of them fit the billl:

    BUSHPIG
    CHOKEBORE
    CASUS BELLI
    GEARJAMMER
    JANITOR JOE
    LOVE 666
    POGO THE CLOWN
    PARTY DIKTATOR

  27. MRow says:

I was merely talking out my ass when I stated above I’m sure this was the Buttholes. Actually, I am now 100% convinced it’s No Trend. No doubt about it.

  28. it sure as hell does sound like No Trend

    http://www.myspace.com/notrendmusic

  29. Joe says:

Here’s the problem with the No Trend theory….

Musically this stuff is pretty standard punk chord riffage. If this is No Trend it would have to be very early demos cuz later “A Dozen Dead Roses”-era No Trend was musically all over the map.

However, the other trait of super early No Trend is Jeff’s completely angry, evil, misanthropic vocals. When you listen to this guy…he doesn’t even sound mad. Just kinda silly…more like Gibby Haynes.

So it doesn’t really fit older or newer No Trend completely althought there are huge similarities….

My bet is that this is a band that was influenced by No Trend, The Butthole Surfers, The God Bullies etc and released a small amount of stuff at some point in the 90’s.

I could be totally wrong too because honestly, I’m stumped.

  30. In case this one hasn’t been figured out yet, the mystery band is called Nimrod and the tracks are from their Grandson of Ham album released on the Canadian Scratch label. Took me about 5 seconds to get it, even if I have not heard the album for 10 years or so. And yeah, the vocals sound a lot like Helios Creed.
Samples of the songs can be found here:

My first time reading this blog, and I’m really enjoying it.
