Paraf – Rijeka / Moj Život Je Novi Val

Paraf – Rijeka / Moj Život Je Novi Val (RTV Ljubljana) 1979. Paraf was another great punk band from the former Yugoslavia. Instead of coming from Novi Sad, Serbia like Pekinska Patka, Paraf came from Rijeka, Croatia. They were politically very left and were viewed as dissidents by the Yugoslavian Communist government of the time who put this record under a high tax rate to dissuade young people from buying it. Paraf’s gigs often got disrupted by police-based violence towards bandmembers and their fans. Musically they were much more traditional punk than Pekinska Patka were. At the same time, they do manage to rock out pretty well. Rijeka in particular, is pretty slick. Of course what do you expect when you lift the guitar line from Chinese Rocks and then add that unique Yugoslavian arty-streetpunk edge to the chorus? It’s a recipe for success no matter how you look at it.
