So I haven’t posted in a while. Like Divine once said before eating a dog turd, “I got lotsa Female Trouble”. Wait….those are two separate movies. Anyhoo, said troubles are causing me to be too exhausted psychologically to write this blog. Joe doesn’t like dealing with emotions. Joe likes to just have fun.
What does all this mean? Well it means that this morning I woke up and said, “‘Joe…dude, it’s time to have some fucking fun.” And what could be more fun than some obscure 1980s HB hardcore? This one comes from my man ChrisO, proprietor of The Punk Crypt. Here’s an excerpt from the bio.
CON800 WAS A HERMOSA/MANHATTAN BEACH PUNK BAND THAT STARTED OUT AS THE ALTERBOYS AROUND 80 /81. THE EARLIEST INCARNATION FEATURED EX ALTERBOYS JOHN ALLDS BASS, CHRISO O’CONNOR VOCALS, BOB JACOBSON DRUMS,AND FLETCHER DRAGGE ON GUITAR.THIS LINE UP WAS BRIEF WITH CHRIS BEING REPLACED BY DOUG CARRION ON VOCALS. THE BAND QUICKY GOT A SET TOGETHER AND WENT INTO A LOCAL STUDIO TO MAKE A DEMO. THE BAND WAS INFLUENCED BY BLACK FLAG AND D.C. HARDCORE BANDS LIKE VOID AND MINORTHREAT WHICH MADE AN INSTANT IMPACT UPON HEARING THOSE EARLY EP’S.
THE DEMO MADE A CLEAR POINT OF WHERE THE BAND WAS COMING FROM, HARDCORE WAS IT.
Now I gotta add my two cents to this. I love VOID and Minor Threat and I understand that this is some serious cross-pollination. I mean I just saw American Hardcore again so I understand this perfectly now. According to the film, it started on the beach in LA with Black Flag and then those Dischord dudes in DC picked it up and enhanced it. Now what this bio is telling me is that after the Dischord dudes picked it up from HB, the SoCal Lot Dogs took it back and what we get is CON800? This doesn’t really follow the official script. Weird huh? So maybe the “official history” we are being taught now is a little over-simplified?
Regardless, Con 800 is a kick-ass band. My favourite tracks are the real fast; short ones Party Nymph and Tuna Gardens. Cuz it reminds me of The Descendents at their most hardcore. Which ain’t surprising considering that Doug left Con800 to join the Descendents and later, Dag Nasty. Wasn’t he in Doggy Style for a bit also? Fletcher and Hank moved on to Pennywise and for Hank, the Nip Drivers.
Con 800 – Outtakes from Demo:
I would like for ChrisO to get me the full demo. But until he does that, we will have to settle for these four songs.
