Fuck this is getting tiresome. Another member of the elite liquidated to make room for more mediocre minds. Mike Conley, singer in the hardcore band M.I.A., fell in the ice up in Chicago and now is dead. This really sucks.
I saw M.I.A. in Saint Louis at the Sports Palace with the Descendents back in 1986 and they put on a hell of a show. The band’s legacy was pretty solid. They were a Nevada band but from an aesthetic perspective they were pure SoCal. I always saw them as having more in common with bands like Secret Hate and Modern Warfare, whom they appeared with on the American Youth Report.
I owned Murder In a Foreign Place in high school but it wasn’t until a few years ago when I finally heard the split LP they did with Genocide that I realized how archetypal the band actually was. I have added those tracks below. Amazing shit really.
The fact that M.I.A. also went on to release one of the first emo albums After The Fact, should not be held against them. At the time it was actually a pretty bold and cool move for them to make even if now it doesnt hold up as well as the early HC stuff.
