Electrocute – On The Beat

Electrocute -On The Beat (Sargent Records) 2008. Electrocute were Berlin (by way of New Mexico) practitioners of “electroclash” a few years ago. Remember that one? If you blinked you may have missed it. They released a great album called Troublesome Bubblegum in 2005 which was like some kind of cross between Wild Planet era B-52s and Peaches. Although I hated the label, I do (and did) like a lot of electroclash artists. One of the most lovable aspects of the brief electroclash fad was its rejection of asexual emo-sensitivity and mopishness in favor of irony, sarcasm and in your face lewdness. Due to the disposable nature of the genre however, it was hard to expect much of a shelf life for any of the bands. Essentially the genre was dominated by bitchy girls singing trashy punk songs with electric beats. What the hell is not to like about that? Peaches, CSS, Ladytron, Electrocute….all great, but where do you go from there? There is nothing more off-putting than a once ironic nihilist discovering “sincerity”. Certainly Ladytron has had to face this issue and results have been inconsistent. So with that said, I was very pleased when Nicole Morier shared the new Electrocute album with me last year because not only is their sense of irony still intact but the music, while still lotso fun, has grown and evolved. Maybe it is the inclusion of Nicole’s new co-leader Legs LeBrock but Electrocute is now expanding its sound and flirting with a lot of different genres including Eno-esque space pop and funk. On The Beat was good enough to be in my Pazz and Jop top ten last year. I hope Electrocute prove me wrong about electroclash and have a very long shelf life. The world needs them to counteract all the dreck. You can download the rest of the album here.
