The Swingers – Counting the Beat

The Swingers – Counting the Beat (Mushroom) 1981. Counting The Beat is an amazing song. The album is not so amazing. Half the songs on it frankly suck…..but Counting The Beat is an AMAZING SONG!!!!!

The Swingers were from New Zealand. I first saw them on Night Flight in the early 80′s. In fact, they, along with DEVO, were my first fave new wave bands. I am still blown away by the catchiness of these songs.

Great minds think alike! I posted the same video a few days ago.

The band also appeared in the movie “Starstuck”, featuring reworked versions of “One Good Reason” and Split Enz’s (which the Swingers spun out of) “Body and Soul”.

On a sadder note, a friend told me that he heard “Counting the Beat” used in a K-Mart commercial a while back.

Wow, a fellow Swingers fan! Good to know ya….There used to be videos for all four of these songs if I remember correctly.

After the initial jolt of hearing The Buzzcocks and Iggy Pop in car commercials, nothing shocks me anymore. In fact, so many of the artists I appreciate were so criminally underappreciated and undercompensated in thier time that it is nice to see them make some bucks later on….

But I know what you’re sayin. I always have to get over that initial jolt of revulsion when I hear one of my favorite songs in a commercial.

Thanks for introducing me to The Swingers! A band that went totaly under my radar back in the days.

cool. One of these dudes was in the early lineup of Split Enz, by the way. “Counting The Beat” is a lost gem.

Similar to the Joboxers, Roman Holliday & the Polecats. Heard of them?

  6. Joe Stumble says:

aw c’mon man. its not similar to Roman Holiday! You talkin’ crazy.

Polecats were a retro rockabilly group that sort of coasted on the coattails of the Stray Cats if I remember and the JoBoxers…

Weren’t they a Dexys Midnight Runners clone?

Its hard for me to see the similarities between those three bands and the Swingers who were like great guitar-driven New Wave. But maybe history has blurred the differences?

The leader of The Swingers was a chap called Phil Judd. He was also one of the original members of a famous (in New Zealand and Australia) band called Split Enz.

    He’s still releasing material today.

These are GREAT Aussie/NZ pop songs. Check out The Swingers later incarnation as ‘Shnell Fenster’, they released an album I think about 1989 called Sound of Trees and the single was called Whisper. If you like The Swingers you will love these. Phil Judd has a cool website – does mad art.

    Great Blog too!
