Biz Markie – The Biz Is Goin’ Off

Biz Markie – The Biz Is Goin Off (Vocal) // The Biz Is Goin Off (Dub) (Cold Chillin’ Records) 1988. If ever there was an artist that doesn’t get the respect he deserves it was Biz Markie. And that may largely be the Biz’s fault. After all, he did record tracks like Just a Friend and Pickin’ Boogers that were clearly novelty records. Problem is, during rap’s infancy, the genre itself was considered a novelty. Now, I am not saying that I considered it such, just that folks with the access to resources did and they exploited the shit out of the genre back then. Think about it, from the 15 million Roxanne Roxanne records to Beat Street to Disorderlies starring the Fat Boys, rap was considered something that was gonna go away real quick so cash in and cash in fast. In fact, the Fat Boys, another act that was amazingly talented but let themselves be exploited, offer a fine parallel to the Biz. Both acts started off as human beatboxes, itself treated as another novelty, and then went on to release tracks that eventually gave them a hit or two before they faded into obscurity. In the case of Biz Markie, what got lost was just how insanely good his rhyming and delivery was. Check out The Biz Is Goin’ Off and witness the pure energy and genius of his delivery. If he would have continued in this direction, I have no doubt that Biz Markie would be treated as a legend today. Shit, he’s already a legend to me.

Awesome stuff. I’ll tell ya – here in NYC way back when Biz was much loved and respected from the moment he came out the gate. As much as any other of those Juice Crew dudes. If anything, when he started having hits with stuff like “Just A Friend” he was considered a sell-out for not keeping it nasty. I know a cat that went to school with him in Brooklyn. He was in special ed. The Biz not the other guy.

Juice Crew! Biz, Kane, and Marl reigned supreme for a brief shining moment in the mid-80s.

  4. Probably one of the best moments of my animation ‘career’ happened when I got a phone call from the man himself enlisting me to create an animated music video for him. It was my 2nd video I’d ever directed, but, I was determined not to let the Biz down.

From what i hear, he was happy with the results, bu, I never got to meet the man in person!
